In September 2016,the Government of Rwanda concluded negotiations of a Public Private Partnership transaction with Bugesera Airport Company(BAC), a special project vehicle with majority shares owned by Mota-Engil Africa (75%) and Aviation Travel and Logistics Holding Ltd(25%) in connection with the development of the New Bugesera International Airport(BIA).

Its in this regard, that in the morning of August 9,2017, The President of Rwanda Paul Kagame layed a foundation stone at the future airport site during the Ground breaking ceremony of the highly anticipated New Bugesera International Airport which after completion will be owned and operated by Bugesera Airport Company for 25 years and be tranfered to the Government of Rwanda after the operation period.

The first phase of the new airport will leave the facility with a presidential terminal, a single Cat II runway of 3750mx45m, one taxiway, a main 30,000sqm passenger terminal on top of a cargo terminal with about 22 check-in counters, 10 gates,6 passenger boarding bridges, 10 immigration counters on arrival and 10 emigration counters on departure which will be able to handle about 1,77 million of passengers a year, plus other main facilities including a commercial space.

This airport will be an essential component in growing the African intra trade and a national compliment to our national carrier RwandAir, we will also ensure this will be constructed with the highest standards.said President Kagame in his remark.

Rwanda is expecting a number of benefits once this huge project is completed such as         The Bugesera Airport being a regional hub in East Africa,a brand new state-of-the art and world class airport, Efficiency and profitability of Rwandan aviation sector will be significantly improved, a new rail link opening in 2030 will imporove the accessibility  to the airport.

The airport is also expected to attract more international traffic,where more airlines might add Rwanda on their routes,without forgetting that this airport will play a key role in stimulating the Rwandan tourism sector which have been showing a significant progess in the past decade.

Its is expected that the full expansion of the airport marking the 5th phase will bring a second runway in 2045.
